SARDINES - crayon on cardboard, 20x30cm, 2010

Sardine or Pilchard is commonly preserved in salt and is a basic stock food for human and sea predators alike. When fresh, the skin has nice silvery glint on the underside, blue with specks of green on top. I found a photo in a japanese food magazine that I made into this painting. The random and haphazard way the sardines were scattered on the tray and the color contrast was very interesting. The name chop was in red chinese ink. The chop block itself was made in Shanghai when I travelled there. The chop is my name in ancient chinese characters.
