TEMPLE OF HEAVEN - watercolor on paper, 15x20cm, unframed, 2002

This painting was done while I was waiting in the tourist bus in Bei Jing. I was tired of walking so while the other tourists were gawking at the temple, I sat inside the bues and painted the temple.

VICTORIA FALLS - acrylic on canvas, 120x150cm, 2009

Victoria falls is a famous waterfall in Zimbabwe Africa. The locals' african tribes call it "Mosi-oa-Tunya" or "The smoke that thunder". I took a photo of the fall from the Zimbabwe side of the fall and that photo was where this painting was derived from. I painted it in relatively quick time and with rough finish. It is currently hanging in my living room

YOSEMITE - acrylic on canvas, 120x150cm, 2009

Yosemite National Park in California USA is a must-see for nature lovers. It has huge granite mountains towering steeply into the sky. I drove into the valley late one afternoon when the sun light penetrated down into the river. This is a view from the river bank where I took a photo and subsequently painted it.

LONG TAIL BOAT - pen and watercolour on paper, 15x20cm, 2011

I attended the wedding of my friend in Kho-phi-phi in Thailand. That was in March 2004. Local fishermen's boat is a long thin wooden boat called Long Tail boat. The long tail is the propeller shaft sticking out of the stern of the boat, I sketched one anchored to the sand. It has a cute "scarf" around its bow head. 8 months later in December, the very spot I was sketching from and the entire west Thailand coast was totally devastated by the Tsunami.

SYDNEY HARBOUR BRIDGE - pen on paper, 15x20cm, 2010

From a vantage point in an area called "The Rocks" just south of the Sydney Harbour Bridge, I made this sketch. The sketch illustrates the complex yet elegant steel girders and beams that made the bridge. The sandstone heritage houses are in the foreground. Kirribilli suburb is beyond to the north.

SARDINES - crayon on cardboard, 20x30cm, 2010

Sardine or Pilchard is commonly preserved in salt and is a basic stock food for human and sea predators alike. When fresh, the skin has nice silvery glint on the underside, blue with specks of green on top. I found a photo in a japanese food magazine that I made into this painting. The random and haphazard way the sardines were scattered on the tray and the color contrast was very interesting. The name chop was in red chinese ink. The chop block itself was made in Shanghai when I travelled there. The chop is my name in ancient chinese characters.

FIREWORKS OVER ANGKE - oil on canvas, 40x75cm, 2013

There is a story behind this. I was driving over Angke fly over at 10 minutes to midnight on 2013 New Years Eve. It was a rainy night. Fireworks were lighting up the dark sky and created a spectacular light show. Every motorist stopped in the middle of the fly over blocking the traffic. Not able to go anywhere, I switched the car off and stepped out and joined the crowd, Looking toward Season City Mall in the distance I could not help but being inspired by the panorama before me. Thus the inspiration for this painting was born.

GARFISH - watercolor on paper, 15x33cm, 2010

This painting was made after I caught two Garfish (known as "kacang-kacang" by Indonesian fishermen). I could not remember where in Sydney I caught these. But because they were so fresh, the skin showed very nice colors of green, blue and silver. The tip of the bill is red and might not be discernible here, but it is there in this painting. The name chop was in red chinese ink. The chop block itself was made in Shanghai when I travelled there. The chop is my name in ancient chinese characters.

MEI MEI JOE - oil on canvas, 30x40cm, 2010

My sisters and I were travelling to Bali and this painting was made from one of our photos then. I was surprised on how quick I did this painting. Portrait paintings normally took me a while to complete. This one was done in under a week. It is now proudly owned by Mei Mei herself.

KISSING POINT BAY - oil on canvas, 40x50cm, 2010

I did this painting ala "plein air", or painting in-situ, or on-site. The location is in Sydney suburb of Putney and the bay is called Kissing Point. There is an interesting story about the origin of the name kissing point but I shall not write it here. I completed the painting after several visits to the site.

POPPIES - acrylic on canvas, 40x40cm, 40x80cm, 30x80cm, 40x50cm, 2011

This quad-canvas acrylic painting was a house warming present to my friend who just bought a new house. She specifically asked for me to paint and copy a painting she saw. She was very happy with the result.

ORCHIDS - oil on canvas, 25x30cm, 2011

An ex-neighbour is an orchid enthusiast and she asked me to paint her an orchid themed painting. I made it just in time to handed it to her in our neighbourhood re-union.

RIVER IN SUMEDANG - oil on canvas, 75x100cm, 2014

This is a scene of a river in Sumedang where the sky was cloudy and but the river was flowing normally. I tried to capture the movement of the water and made it the essence of the painting. I think I have succeeded in the capture. The painting is in the hand of a local collector.

LILYPADS - oil on canvas, 40x50cm, 2009

This painting is my favorite and it has the most comments and thumb-ups in my face book page. I was in Tampak Siring in Bali when I saw the lily pads floating in one of the pond there. I took a photo of it then awhile later I painted it, not knowing it would be the most liked painting ever according to my friends. It is now hanging in my apartment in Jakarta.

SAWAH LANDSCAPE - oil on canvas, 40x60cm, 2015

This was done on the request of my collector client from New York USA. She would like to have a typically Indonesian landscape painting and she asked me to make one for her.

GARUT LANDSCAPE - oil on canvas, 40x50cm, 2015

This painting was actually started in 2011. It was left abandoned in the store room unfinished for a few years because I simply had no idea how to continue it. I almost threw this painting out. Then one day in 2015 I suddenly knew how to complete it. What colors and light to use. It was such a revealing moment to finally complete the painting. I am glad I did not throw the painting to the rubbish bin. It is sold now.
